What are interlocking blocks?

Interlocking concrete blocks are a robust, cost efficient way to build temporary retaining structures.

There are two primary functions:

Building retaining walls – creating bay walls for the storage of materials such as grain, salt and aggregate materials. Our blocks are designed to resist the forces of the material acting on the wall. Our products can also be used to build earth retaining walls to support embankments.

Building free standing walls – our products can help to build free standing walls for flood barriers, traffic calming and segemeration or security barriers / fencing.

Interlocking blocks are:

  • Very cost-effective
  • Simple and quick to build a solid wall of any dimension
  • Extremely durable and don’t require much maintenance
  • Reusable – the blocks can be dismantled and used in a different configuration.

TYPICAL configuration for blocks

PBS interlocking concrete blocks are available in a variety of sizes, from 2 to 10 section. We list here the most common sizes of blocks; 4, 6 and 8.

The standard, most commonly used block is the LG8: 1600mm x 800mm x 800mm weighing-in at 2400 kgs.

Each block is cast complete with a lifting pin which means the arrangement of blocks can be reconfigured relatively easily without the need for specialist lifting equipment or grabs. Alternatively, we can reconfigure for setup for you.

These blocks are extremely high quality and are renowned for the durability and strength.

Why Choose Pro Block Security?

PBS can provide a comprehensive perimeter security solution, whatever your project or need. We work with a number of UK businesses as well as police authorities and other public service providers.

We can provide the following:

Perimeter security – our interlocking blocks can be used to create or secure a perimeter or a boundary from unwanted vehicle access.

Construction site security – Should you need to restrict vehicle access to your construction site, our temporary barrier blocks can control how vehicles enter the site, reducing the possibility of vehicle or equipment being stolen.

Car park barriers – interlocking concrete barriers can be designed to give you a clearly marked out parking area and serve to restrict vehicles to where you want them to be parked.

Public space protection – A number of recent terrorist attacks have involved the usage of vehicle. Our concrete barrier blocks can be used to restrict vehicle access to areas in which there is a high concentration of pedestrians.

Highway protection – workers need to be protected from hazards such as fast moving cars. Interlocking concrete blocks can be placed side by side, offering a robust, crash tested barrier to protect highway workers.

Interlocking Concrete Blocks FAQ

What Size of Interlocking Concrete Blocks Do I Need?

Interlocking concrete blocks have a considerable number of applications. The precise blocks you need will depend on the purpose.

For example:

  • Our three most popular interlocking block models range from 800 mm to 1,600 mm in length.
  • Temporary vehicle barriers will need to be stronger than a temporary material storage space on a construction site.
  • Flood defences and retaining walls built from interlocking concrete blocks vary considerably depending on the required height, depth, width and resistance.

If you’re unsure how many blocks you need or which size is suitable for your project, please contact the Problock team so we can advise.

Can I Change the Configuration of My Concrete Blocks?

Indeed you can! Our interlocking blocks come with lifting pins cast into the concrete. That means that the Problock team can rearrange your blocks, move walls, or remove any blocks that are no longer required with ease.

You may reconfigure your blocks yourself or contact us if you’d like us to manage the set up for you.

Does Problock Deliver in My Area?

We offer a nationwide delivery service and hire out interlocking concrete blocks to any areas within the UK.

Our concrete barrier block delivery services are fast and reliable, and we can offer expedited dispatch if you have an urgent requirement.

What are Interlocking Concrete Blocks Used For?

Concrete blocks are highly diverse and have a range of uses. Some of the most popular applications include:

  • Erecting retaining walls with interlocking concrete blocks providing a solid, immovable wall that can shore up soil or contain materials such as salt and gains.
  • Creating traffic barriers or traffic calming systems.
Security protection, with concrete blocks installed across potential vehicular access points. This use is also an effective way to protect against ram-raiding.
  • Blocks can also be configured into a freestanding wall as a safety precaution, constructing an impenetrable boundary wall.

Another option is to consider using concrete blocks with Heras fencing to create a tough perimeter.

If you have a job in mind that you think concrete blocks might be suitable for, do give us a call, and we’ll advise on the best solution.

How Will My Interlocking Concrete Blocks be Delivered?

Once you have placed your hire order, we’ll confirm the date and time of delivery at your convenience. Blocks arrive on our specialist vehicles and can be offloaded and erected quickly.

Problock delivery teams are fully trained in configuring interlocking concrete blocks, so they can either offer to supply your blocks on-site, including offload with our commercial lifting equipment, or construct the required placement to your specification.

Can Concrete Barriers Protect Against Flooding?

They can, yes. A concrete wall built from interlocking blocks is a fast, cost-effective and efficient way to protect against flood waters or water ingress.

What Sizes of Concrete Block Does Problock Offer?

Our concrete blocks come in three main sizes, as below:

  • LG4 blocks – 1,200 kg per block, measuring 800 mm in length, height and width.
  • LG6 blocks – 1,800 kg per block, measuring 1,200 mm long and 800 mm in height and width.
  • LG8 blocks – 2,400 kg per block, measuring 1,600 mm long and again 800 mm in height and width.

The uniform height and width of all three models mean that you can mix and match the sizes to achieve the shape of the required structure.

There are other options available in addition to these three most popular dimensions, so please enquire if you need a different size or layout.

How Long is the Hire Period on a Set of Interlocking Concrete Blocks?

Problock offers flexible hire periods, depending on the type of job and whether you have a finite date at which you require the interlocking concrete blocks to be collected.

Many hire periods are open-ended, for example, if the blocks are being used to protect highway workers during roadworks.

In other cases, there might be a short-term requirement to protect a high-value property from ram-raiding or break-ins during a public disturbance, in which case you can advise on the required length of hire.

If you aren’t sure how long you will need to hire your concrete blocks, let us know as we can accommodate this.

Do I Need Any Other Materials to Construct a Wall from Interlocking Blocks?

No, this is one of the core benefits of choosing to build your defences from concrete blocks. The blocks slot together and don’t require any adhesives, cement or equipment to put them into place.
